2nd Annual Upland Bird Hunt

BO and his phesant.

BO and his pheasant

Today all the guys at Briary River went on our 2nd Annual Upland Bird hunt at Spring Grove Preserve.  It was Bo’s first trip with us and we had a ball.  It was a chore to get the weather to cooperate with us today, but in the end, it was a great day.

The facilities at Spring Grove were excellent, as usual, and there were plenty of hard flying birds.  Our guide, Doug, is uncanny with his ability to mark birds, both the ones that were knocked down and the singles that got away.  He also has a super sense of humor and is an all around great guy to hunt with.

I shot well, with the big birds, but I really don’t know what was going on with the quail, I was far from being on spot, even though I fell my fair share of birds.  We had to hunt hard and fast to try to beat the weather, but we got managed to get the entire hunt in, It seemed as though that effected all of our shooting.

BO in amazement at the chukka that he killed.

The bright point of the day was Bo.  He had his seventh birthday day before yesterday, so this was a birthday treat for him of sorts.  He managed to kill a pheasant, a chukka, and a quail.  You couldn’t tell the boy much, and getting the boy to tell his hunting story at the clubhouse seemed to be the highlight of the hunt for everyone.  Give the boy a few years and there will be little need for anyone else to take a gun.

Stay tuned and we will tell you of our second annual quail fry.
